I didn't get to comment on this when it happened due to ongoing issues with unpacking and whatnot. The guy who probably should've won the damn award, TJ Hensick, isn't even a Hobey Baker Finalist??? Are you freaking kidding me?
In favor of who?
Dave Brown: I can live with him being there. He had a great year, ND won the CCHA regular season and playoff championships and he was a big reason why. Personally, I don't think he was the best goalie in his conference, but they aren't going to give it to someone whose team didn't sniff the NCAAs. So if you want a goalie, Brown is a good choice.
Ryan Duncan: Is he even the best player on his line? Nation's second leading goal scorer, I get it. But he only had eight more goals than a pass-first-second-and-third player in TJ Hensick (and twenty less assists). Not to mention the fact that, with all due respect to Kevin Porter and David Rohlfs, Duncan was playing with TJ Oshie and Jonathan Toews! Hell, I could put in 20 playing with those two. This nomination reeks of "OMG we just have to have a WCHA player in the Hobey Hat Trick because that conference is oh so good and the rest = teh sux."
Eric Ehn: How cute. How. How. Cute. Someone from a shitty ass conference has a good year, so let's throw him in as a Hobey finalist. Never mind the fact that Hensick had five more points, one less goal (but one more game winner), and doesn't play in ATLANTIC FREAKING HOCKEY. Is there any way to justify this beyond the fact that it's a feel-good story? Hell, let's just give Boise State a chance in a BCS game while we're at it. (Wait, they beat who in what bowl?) Scratch that last comment.
Unbelievable. I was absolutely stunned when I saw that release.

I have a little bit different viewpoint. Hensick should have been a hat trick finalist, no doubt. The one that shocked me in replacing him is Duncan. As you say, is he even the best player on his own line? He's good, but Hobey good? Hell, I can think of a half-dozen players over the last 5-6 years who had better seasons and weren't even in the top 10 Hobey finalists.
Now, I do have to take some issue with Ehn. I think he's a worthy finalist. Second in the nation in scoring, weak conference or not, while attending a freaking US millitary acadamy is damn impressive. He gets up at 5am, does millitary drills, classes, practice, and mandatory study every day and still scores 64 points? I have no problem with him in the Hat Trick. In fact, since TJ isn't a part of it, I hope Ehn wins tomorrow. If you think about who Hobey Baker really was (a millitary pilot after his school days) it's fitting.
That's a fair point about Ehn. I just don't put a lot of stock in the point total since it's against such piss-poor competition.
But he did perform pretty well in their games again the "big" schools this year.
I'd smile if Ehn got it. I'd go as far as you did and say I hope he wins it. Nice story and all. Brown's had a great year, but is it the system? There have been several goalies who have had years like that and not gotten the award (Howard, LeNeveau, etc.) I definitely don't think Duncan should get it.
I still think Hensick is more deserving than any of the three in the Hat Trick and I don't think it's sour grapes. I'm pissed that he didn't win it. But it's an absolute disgrace that he's not even in the Hat Trick.
Unbelievable. Duncan, are they kidding? Most ridiculous Hobey winner since 2000 when Mike Motteau won (should have been Steve Reinprecht). I just am stunned. Duncan wasn't even in the Hobey talk until very late in the season, when suddenly it seemed to come out of nowhere. He's a very good player, but come on!
Final 3 should have been Brown, Ehn, and Hensick; I wouldn't have had a problem with any one of them winning it (obviously I would have been rooting for TJ).
But he plays in the WCHA, so his point totals should be multiplied by 4, since that conference is SO good.
That's just hilarious....
